Reconstructing the Higgs boson in dileptonic W decays at hadron collider

چکیده
We examine the prospect to measure the Higgs boson mass using the recently introduced kinematic variable, the MT2-Assisted On-Shell (MAOS) momentum, that provides a systematic approximation to the invisible neutrino momenta in dileptonic decays of W -boson pair. For this purpose, we introduce a modified version of the MAOS momentum, that is applicable even when one or both of the W -bosons from the Higgs decay are in off-shell. It is demonstrated that the MAOS Higgs mass distribution, constructed with the MAOS neutrino momenta, shows a clear peak at the true Higgs boson mass when an event cut selecting higher value of MT2 is employed. We perform the likelihood analysis for this MAOS mass distribution to determine the Higgs boson mass, and find it can improve the accuracy of the Higgs mass measurement. Our results indicate that the MAOS Higgs mass can be useful also for the discovery or exclusion of the Higgs boson in certain mass range.

Measuring the Higgs boson mass in dileptonic W -boson decays at hadron colliders
It is expected that hadron collider measurements of the Higgs boson mass using the decay h → W+W−, followed by the leptonic decay of each W -boson, will be performed by fitting the shape of a distribution that is sensitive to the Higgs mass. We demonstrate that the variable most commonly used to measure the Higgs mass in this channel is not optimal as it contains an unnecessary and even counter...
متن کاملHunting for the intermediate-mass Higgs boson in a hadron collider.
We examine the feasibility of identifying in a hadron machine the standard, neutral Higgs boson, produced in association with a W, when the mass of the Higgs is between approximately 100 GeV and 2 mw . The production cross section is calculated with quasi-realistic cuts imposed assuming that the Higgs decays into tf. Possible backgrounds arising from the continuum production of tf, t&, or Eb ac...
متن کاملW vs. QCD Jet Tagging at the Large Hadron Collider
High energy collisions of protons at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce massive particles such as W, Z, Higgs bosons, and top quarks. A key task in the search for physics beyond the standard model is to study the kinematic configurations of these heavy particles. The massive particles are observed indirectly by the energy signature they generate. The heavy particles decay into quarks and g...

The large cross section for t t̄ production at the large hadron collider (LHC) and at any future hadron collider provides a high-statistics and relatively clean environment for a study of W boson properties: after tagging on a leptonic decay of one of the W s and the two b jets, an additional W still remains in the event. We study the prospect of making the first exclusive hadronic decay of a fu...
متن کاملProbing the Higgs self-coupling at hadron colliders using rare decays
We investigate Higgs boson pair production at hadron colliders for Higgs boson masses mH<140 GeV and the rare decay of one of the two Higgs bosons. While in the standard model the number of events is quite low at the CERN Large Hadron Collider ~LHC!, a first, albeit not very precise, measurement of the Higgs boson self-coupling is possible in the gg→HH→bb̄gg channel. A luminosity-upgraded LHC co...
